How Intuitive Are You When Eating? Discover Your Connection to Food

Intuitive eating is an approach based on trusting the body's internal cues to guide our eating decisions. Unlike traditional diets that focus on external rules, intuitive eating fosters a positive relationship with food, respecting physical and emotional needs.

The principles of intuitive eating

Created by Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch, intuitive eating is based on 10 fundamental principles that help us reconnect with our bodies:

  1. Reject the diet mentality : Leave behind the false promises of restrictive diets.

  2. Honoring Hunger : Listening to biological hunger cues and responding with appropriate foods.

  3. Making peace with food : Stop seeing certain foods as "forbidden."

  4. Challenge the food police : Question rigid beliefs about what is “right” or “wrong” to eat.

  5. Discover satisfaction : Make the experience of eating pleasurable and comforting.

  6. Feeling full : Recognizing when your body is satisfied and making a decision.

  7. Managing emotions without food : Find alternatives to deal with stress, sadness, or boredom.

  8. Respect the body : Accept it as it is, without comparisons.

  9. Movement for pleasure : Choose physical activities that you enjoy, rather than focusing only on burning calories.

  10. Gentle Nutrition : Choosing foods that make you feel good, both in the short and long term.

Tracy Tylka's Intuitive Eating Scale

Dr. Tracy Tylka, an expert in psychology and intuitive eating, developed a tool called the Intuitive Eating Scale (IES) . This instrument assesses how closely you embrace intuitive eating principles in your life.

The scale focuses on four main areas:

  1. Trusting your body's internal signals : How much you listen to and respect your hunger and satiety signals.

  2. Unconditional Permission to Eat : How freely you allow yourself to enjoy all foods without guilt.

  3. Avoiding emotional eating : How well you manage your emotions without automatically turning to food.

  4. Respecting your body : How you feel about your body and how that affects your food choices.

Reflect on your relationship with food

The Intuitive Eating Scale is a valuable tool for reflecting on your relationship with food and your body. It's not about achieving perfection, but rather understanding where you are and what areas you can improve to foster a healthier and more conscious connection with yourself.

By practicing intuitive eating, you'll not only improve your relationship with food, but you'll also learn to trust your body more and appreciate the small steps you take toward a more balanced and fulfilling life.

How intuitive are you when eating?

If you'd like to find out, I invite you to complete a questionnaire based on Tracy Tylka's scale. It will be an opportunity to reflect and take the first step toward a more harmonious relationship with food.

Remember: every step counts, and reconnecting with your body is a path full of learning and transformation.
